BURLINGTON, WA – A 28-point night from the free throw line combined with balanced scoring featuring four Tigers in double figures keyed a fourth quarter comeback in Burlington-Edison’s 68-60 win over Meridian in a Northwest Conference boys’ high school basketball game that was webcast live here at WinNW.com.

After building a 16-5 first quarter lead, the Tigers were outscored 39-27 the next two quarters and trailed 44-43 entering the final eight minutes. With Meridian’s Chase Heslep, Patrick Carlson and Blake Briones all fouling out, Burlington-Edison (12-4, 5-4 NWC) clinched the win from the foul line, outscoring the Trojans 25-16 in the final period while finishing with a 28-5 advantage from the free throw line.

Aaron Watts led the Tigers with a game high 19 points, Nathan Haddock scored 12, while Dalton Schwetz and Taylor Nelson added 11 points each.

Denver VanderYacht had a big night for Meridian (6-9, 3-5 NWC), with 14 points and 15 rebounds as the Trojans also had four players score 10 or more. Alijah Garcia scored 14 points, Heslep 11 and Kelby Todd tallied ten.

The night included this year’s inductions into the Burlington-Edison Athletic Hall-of-Fame. Former Tiger greats Dan Berentsen, Bob Bourns, Brent “Buck” Gower, Dave Komar, Bob Lacey, Steve Mueller, Jay Overway, Dan Peth, Stan Radar, Richard Sakuma, Steve Skogmo, Randy Tastad, and former Burlington-Edison football and wrestling coach Jack McTaggart were enshrined in front of an enthusiastic crowd that included numerous family members, former coaches, and teachers of the new hall of famers.

BELLINGHAM, WA – The Burlington-Edison Tigers held Meridian to single digit scoring in each quarter on their way to a 60-27 victory over the Trojans in Northwest Conference girls’ high school basketball action webcast live here at WinNW.com.

The Lady Tigers pounced on the Trojans early, building a 20-7 first quarter advantage and 33-14 halftime lead en-route to their sixth straight win heading into Saturday’s showdown with Lynden, a game which we’ll also webcast live here at WinNW.com.

Burlington-Edison’s Sydney Brown led all scorers with 15 points on five 3-pointers, Ryleigh Swagerty added 14 points, with Katlyn Mataya and Ellary Torset scoring 8 points each as the Tigers took 85 shots from the field while limiting Meridian to 42 shots. Burlington-Edison limits opponents to a conference low average of just 33 points per game.

The Lady Tigers (13-2, 7-1 NWC), under first year head coach Bruce Shearer, continue the winning tradition established by former head coach Mike Buckholz, who retired after leading Burlington-Edison to a second place finish at last year’s state 2A tournament.

Ali Wason’s nine points led Meridian (4-10, 1-7 NWC) in scoring. Along with being outshot from the field by a 2-to-1 margin, the Trojans committed a season high 38 turnovers.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, WA – Facing some of the best high school wrestling teams in the state, the host Sedro-Woolley Cubs earned a respectable sixth place finish at the annual Spud Walley Invitational Wrestling Tournament, while the other Northwest Conference team in the tournament, the Bellingham Red Raiders, finished 14th.

The Tahoma Bears, the top-ranked Class 4A team in the state by Washington Wrestling Report, dominated the tournament with 257 points to outdistance second place Enumclaw (170 points), the number one ranked 3A team in the state, by 87 points. Orting, the number one ranked Class 1A team in the state, finished third with 162 points, followed by Kelso (144), Tumwater (115.5), and Sedro-Woolley (107). Bellingham scored 35 points to finish 14th in the 15 team event.

Brady Mast (152 lbs.) and Kevin Rabenstein (285 lbs.) were the top finishing Cubs, with each advancing into the championship finals and placing second, while Boyce Johnson (132 lbs.) and Kyle Morgan (145 lbs.) earned third place medals.

TACOMA, WA – The Lynden Lions capped an undefeated season with a thrilling fourth quarter comeback and a 17-16 win over Archbishop Murphy at the WIAA Dairy Farmers of Washington / Les Schwab Class 2A Football Championship game in the Tacoma Dome.

Trailing 14-10 and facing a fourth-and-16 from their own 3-yard-line, Lions’ head coach Curt Kramme decided the strategy that gave his team the best chance of winning was to have quarterback Josh Kraght take a safety by running out of the back of the end zone with 4:13 remaining in the game.

Lynden kicker Santiago Lopez followed the safety with a picture perfect onside kick that bounced off the turf and into the hands of the Lions’ John Shine.

Kramme credited assistant coach Jim Taubenheim for coming up with the idea. “Somebody brought it to my attention that taking the safety would only put us down by six, Kramme said, “Jim deserves credit for coming up with the idea and having the confidence to talk about it with somebody.” Kramme also said that assistant coach Blake VanDalen suggested trying the onside kick on the ensuing free kick.

After being held to just 11 yards on 11 first half plays, the Lynden’s offense came to life after Shine’s onside kick recovery with a nine-play, 65-yard game-winning drive. Kyle Hanson’s 11-yard touchdown run tied the game with 1:48 remaining and Lopez’s extra point sealed a perfect 14-0 season and the Lions’ fourth state title in the last six years.

TACOMA, WA – After playing what may have been their poorest half of any game this season, the Lynden Lions battled back from a 10-0 deficit to advance into the state Class 2A championship game with a 17-10 win over W.F. West of Chehalis in the state semi-finals played in the Tacoma Dome.

BELLEVUE, WA – What was supposed to be a football game ended up being a track meet on turf in the Lynden Lions’ 55-28 victory over the Interlake Saints in the WIAA State 2A Quarterfinals played at Interlake Stadium.

LACEY, WA – After 10 straight wins by an average score of 42-9, the Lynden Lions finally found a worthy opponent in North Thurston, coming from behind for a 29-26 win in the opening round of the state 2A high school football playoffs at South Sound Stadium.

The Lions took advantage of early Rams’ miscues in building a 16-0 lead before North Thurston gained their composure and scored 19 unanswered points to take a 19-16 halftime lead.

Trailing for the first time all season, Lynden responded with the third of Josh Kraght’s four touchdown runs to grab a 23-19 lead at 6:20 of the third quarter, but the fourth-ranked Rams countered with a 12 play, 80-yard touchdown drive to retake the lead at 26-23 on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Lions’ offensive line led the way on an 11 play, all on the ground, 78-yard drive that Kraght capped with his fourth touchdown to give Lynden the lead and Zac Vis recovered a North Thurston fumble with 3:01 remaining to secure the victory.

LYNDEN – The Lynden Lions started slow, yet finished strong in a 35-7 victory over the Cedarcrest Wolves in a Northwest District football game, earning a berth to the WIAA Class 2A State Playoffs.

After a scoreless first quarter, Lions quarterback Jordan Kreider connected on his first of two touchdowns in the game, with a 10 yard pass to Luke Christiansen to give Lynden an early lead .

Running back Ryan Hanson scored on two rushing touchdowns of 37 and 5 yards, respectively. Lynden’s starting quarterback Josh Kraght added to the tally with a run from 12 yards out for paydirt.

The final scoring play of the ball game came with a fourth quarter touchdown pass of 19 yards from Kreider to Zack Vis.
