BURLINGTON, WA – Two teams with modest two game winning streaks will battle tonight when the Meridian Trojans visit the Burlington-Edison Tigers in a Northwest Conference boys’ high school basketball game we’ll webcast live here at WinNW.com.
After starting the new year with three losses in four games, Meridan (6-8, 3-4 NWC) has won two in a row, including a 49-48 victory over Sedro-Woolley, a team which defeated Burlington-Edison 67-59, Jan 5. Meridian is led in scoring by their tallest player and one of their shortest. 6′-8″ Trojan’s center Chase Heslep averages 12.5 points per game while 5′-11″ guard Edward Garcia averages 12.2 ppg.
After also opening the new year with three losses in four games, the Tigers (11-4, 4-4 NWC) have won twice this week, including a 59-49 victory Tuesday night over Ferndale, which was just the fourth loss of the season for the Golden Eagles. Burlington-Edison has three players averaging double figures in scoring; Daron Browning (14.5), Aaron Watts (13.9), and long distance operator Taylor Nelson (10.4).

BELLINGHAM, WA – The Burlington-Edison Tigers held Meridian to single digit scoring in each quarter on their way to a 60-27 victory over the Trojans in Northwest Conference girls’ high school basketball action webcast live here at WinNW.com.
The Lady Tigers pounced on the Trojans early, building a 20-7 first quarter advantage and 33-14 halftime lead en-route to their sixth straight win heading into Saturday’s showdown with Lynden, a game which we’ll also webcast live here at WinNW.com.
Burlington-Edison’s Sydney Brown led all scorers with 15 points on five 3-pointers, Ryleigh Swagerty added 14 points, with Katlyn Mataya and Ellary Torset scoring 8 points each as the Tigers took 85 shots from the field while limiting Meridian to 42 shots. Burlington-Edison limits opponents to a conference low average of just 33 points per game.
The Lady Tigers (13-2, 7-1 NWC), under first year head coach Bruce Shearer, continue the winning tradition established by former head coach Mike Buckholz, who retired after leading Burlington-Edison to a second place finish at last year’s state 2A tournament.
Ali Wason’s nine points led Meridian (4-10, 1-7 NWC) in scoring. Along with being outshot from the field by a 2-to-1 margin, the Trojans committed a season high 38 turnovers.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, WA – Facing some of the best high school wrestling teams in the state, the host Sedro-Woolley Cubs earned a respectable sixth place finish at the annual Spud Walley Invitational Wrestling Tournament, while the other Northwest Conference team in the tournament, the Bellingham Red Raiders, finished 14th.
The Tahoma Bears, the top-ranked Class 4A team in the state by Washington Wrestling Report, dominated the tournament with 257 points to outdistance second place Enumclaw (170 points), the number one ranked 3A team in the state, by 87 points. Orting, the number one ranked Class 1A team in the state, finished third with 162 points, followed by Kelso (144), Tumwater (115.5), and Sedro-Woolley (107). Bellingham scored 35 points to finish 14th in the 15 team event.
Brady Mast (152 lbs.) and Kevin Rabenstein (285 lbs.) were the top finishing Cubs, with each advancing into the championship finals and placing second, while Boyce Johnson (132 lbs.) and Kyle Morgan (145 lbs.) earned third place medals.
